On 23 April 2018, in New York, the United Nations established the World Bike Day. It is now celebrated every year on the 3rd of June.
According to the United Nations General Assembly, cycling is “a simple, accessible, reliable, clean, sustainable and environmentally friendly means of transport that promotes environmental stewardship and maintains health.”
What is the purpose of creating this day?
Cycling is, above all, good for your health, it allows you to practice regular physical activity. If this activity is practiced consistently, it reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke in particular. It is also a more economical means of transport, especially for poorer countries and cities. From an ecological point of view, cycling is also important in the fight against pollution and climate change.
For United Nations member states, the aim of the day is to increase the use of cycling, to draw attention to the benefits of cycling and to encourage UN member states to give cycling a prominent place in development policies and programmes. Members commit to improving road safety and infrastructure, promoting the use of bicycles, and developing a cycling culture.
