You’ve probably heard of Las Ramblas de Barcelona, but have you heard of La Rambla del Poblenou? Less well-known than the one from the historic quarter, La Rambla del Poblenou is a charming shopping street with a central pedestrian area.
Discover also many works of street art scattered throughout the neighborhood. For the more curious among you, the Museums of Science and of Design will certainly capture your attention. Finally, the port and the adjacent Olympic Village offer pleasant, open spaces where pedalling will be very pleasant!
Its history: Poblenou through the ages
Before it became the Barcelona district we know today, Poblenou was part of a completely different city: San Marti. Integrated into the Catalan capital in 1897, it still bears the traces of its past.
An industrial district with a Manchester feel
Now a residential area, the Poblenou was originally built and expanded as an industrial district.
Its first buildings date back to the 19th century and were mainly factories. This industrial role, which can still be seen in certain corners of the district, has given it its name. Indeed, Poblenou is the Catalan translation of ‘New Town’. This alludes directly to the dynamics of urbanisation linked to the industrial era and its activities. What is more, it is interesting to note that this name is of popular origins. It began to be used by the neighbours and the workers themselves in the mid-19th century, before being officially adopted in 1897 when the district became part of Barcelona.
It is also worth noting that the district’s nickname, the ‘Catalan Manchester’, is a direct allusion to that period in the district’s history.

An olympic shift
While the industrial era was responsible for the construction of the Poblenou, the Olympic Games are responsible for its current urbanisation. When Barcelona hosted the Games in 1992, the city chose Poblenou as the site for its Olympic Village.
Located close to the city centre and just beyond the famous Barceloneta district, the area was restructured to accomadate the competing delegations. Although the ‘village’ aspect is more visible from the air, the harmony of the reddish buildings still conveys that unique residential atmosphere.
Just next door, the Champions Square, where Spanish medallists are honoured, bears witness to the role played by these streets. A little further on, the Church of Abraham, a cosmopolitan place of worship built for the occasion, also stands out.
Finally, end your Olympic walk at the two towers. Once hotels built for the press and celebrities wishing to enjoy the event, these buildings now mark the limit between Poblenou and Barceloneta. If you face them, you’ll be able to admire the Sagrada Familia in the background, while if you turn your back on them, you’ll have a breathtaking view of Barcelona’s beaches.
