The International Union of Architects (UIA) has decided that Barcelona will become the UIA-Unesco World Capital of Architecture in 2026. The city was already the capital of this event in 1996.
The Catalan city outperformed Beijing by 147 votes to 129. The decision was made in Rio de Janeiro, which currently holds the title of World Capital of Architecture. Rio de Janeiro will retain this title until 2023, when Copenhagen will hand it over. The Danish capital will pass the title to Barcelona in 2026.
The architecture, the landscape and the urban planning of the city of Barcelona will make the city a world architectural reference.
Throughout the year, cultural events on architecture and town planning are organised in the Catalan capital to convey to citizens the importance of these fields.
These events will strengthen the city’s role as a centre of production and also of thought in contemporary architecture and urban design. The city will also deepen its ability to improve the lives of its citizens.
The relationship between the city and the city’s arhitecture is recognised worldwide and allows us to think about a viable and sustainable future.
We hope to see you in 2026 to make the most of the city of Barcelona with events that will blow your mind!
