37th America’s Cup with Born Bike Tours Barcelona

What's this about?

The America’s Cup is reputed to be the most prestigious sailing competition in the world. It is also the oldest trophy in the history of international sport. This international sailing competition was created in 1851, but was first held in August 1870, after the American Civil War. In 1983, the regattas were renamed the Louis Vuitton Cup.

This international event sees sailing clubs from different countries compete to win the famous silver trophy.

The winning team retains the cup until challenged by another club, forcing the holders to defend their title in a new regatta. This rule comes from the 3rd edition: the regattas pit the ‘defender’ against the ‘challenger’.

The name ‘America’s Cup’ comes from the schooner America, which won the first edition of the regatta. Since 1958, the winners have been the USA 13 times, New Zealand 5 times and Switzerland 2 times.

The participants with Challenger status against New Zealand are: Italy, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the USA and France. To have a competitive team, the sums involved are between 50 and 100 million euros.

The other side of the coin and controversial opinions:

The sporting authorities, in agreement with the Port Vell concession holder, have decided to evict the Barceloneta fishermen without providing any compensation for the nearly 50 workers on nine trawlers. This measure is all the more prejudicial given that the summer is the most lucrative period for this sector. The port authority told Equinox that only 8 of the 22 boats, i.e. the trawlers, would be affected by the sporting event.
